Originally founded in Grenchen, Switzerland by Walter Vogt in 1912, Fortis Swiss watches are surely owed a great deal from today's watchmaking industry; for although they did not invent the first automatic, self-winding wristwatch movement, Fortis watches were the first to use Manx watchmaker John Harwood's breakthrough concept when the Fortis Harwood self-winding wristwatch became the world's first production automatic wristwatch which depended on the movement of the wrist to maintain a 12-hour power reserve when fully wound.
